Getting an autism diagnosis — and the right support afterward — can feel like navigating a maze. But the last few years have brought real progress in how early autism can be spotted, how care is delivered, and who's being left out of the process. Here's a snapshot of where things stand.
Screening starts earlier than most parents expect
The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends autism-specific screening at routine pediatric visits at 18 and 24 months — not just a general developmental check, but a targeted look for early signals. Co-occurring issues like sleep problems, feeding difficulties, or anxiety can be identified and treated early, and a child who screens positive but isn't ultimately diagnosed with autism often still has "symptoms worthy of further evaluation and intervention." What "evidence-based" treatment actually looks like

Diagnosis is still slower and harder for girls and women

Part of the reason is what researchers call the "female autism phenotype": traits and interests that read as more socially typical to outside observers, plus a pattern of "camouflaging" — consciously or unconsciously masking autistic traits to fit in socially.
